Thesis Title: Philanthropy and Secularisation: The Funding of Anglican Voluntary Religious Organisations in London, 1860 -1914

About

My thesis examines a much neglected area of research: that of finance and modern religious history.  My research investigates the relationship between religious adherence and the financing of religion. This thesis looks at the finances of a range of Anglican voluntary organisations, in the period 1860 to 1914, as case studies.  The questions posed by this thesis will be approached by means of statistical analysis of annual report data; looking specifically at income in the form of donations, annual subscriptions, bequests from Wills and church collections. This analysis will look both at philanthropy by individuals and by the corporate bodies.  This PhD research is attached to the ‘Building on History: the Church in London’ project. This project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and a partnership between the Anglican Diocese of London, Lambeth Palace Library, King’s College London and the Open University.
