Thesis Title: The geochemistry and astrobiology of hydrothermal systems associated with impact craters
About
I am a PhD student in the Department of Physical Sciences at Open University in Milton Keynes. My research is in the area of impact-induced hydrothermal systems. A period of heavy bombardment during the Hadean would have produced many of these systems, producing geochemical variability in a crust that was young and homogeneous. The resulting minerals may have played a role in the prebiotic chemistry leading to the origins of life.
As well as providing potential niches for early life on Earth (and Mars?), later impacts have been implicated in some of the mass extinction events through geological time. Analysis of crater lake sediments can reveal how the ecosystem within the lake, as well that of the surrounding impact area, re-established itself and recovered post-impact.
