About

I research the sociology and social history of cultural production and consumption. My publications fall into the fields of cultural studies and the history of the book.

Although I remain committed to a painstakingly fine-grained approach to interviews, primary documents, and naturally-occurring speech, I have come to recognise that 'discourse analysis' only becomes a tenable research methodology when integrated with (and to a great extent subsumed within) other forms of scholarly inquiry. Social class is one of the key determinants of discourse, for example, yet it cannot be understood by reference to discourse alone.
