About

While my research is multidisciplinary, my main grounding is in politics and political theory / philosophy.  My doctorate on unintentional utopia was supervised by Prof Barbara Goodwin at the University of East Anglia. My research into ideal communities continues, with a book stemming from my thesis in draft following publishers' interest, and an article in a special collection of the 'Journal of Cultural Research' on intent and utopia published Spring 2009.  My most recent paper, on the pirate community of Isle St Marie, Madagascar, was presented to the Utopian Studies conference in Porto, July 2009.  Following the conference, I am putting together a proposal for a collection of essays on the utopianism of Philip K Dick.

Since September 2009, I have been an Associate Lecturer with the Social Sciences Faculty at the Open University. Until July 2008, I lectured in the Government Department at Essex University, being Jean Monnet module Professor, and was course supervisor for three courses on Political Sociology, European Union, and Democracy. I previously taught politics, IR and political theory in the School of Political, Social and International Studies at the University of East Anglia, and briefly lectured on Utopia for the Politics Department at the Nottingham Trent University prior to that.

I have been the Administrator for Information and Governance in the Arts Faculty at the Open University since March 2008. I previously worked in higher education administration, health regulation, and central Civil Service (Foreign and Commonwealth Office).
