About

My PhD explores why and how Catholicism became accepted in England, given the post–Reformation tradition that the Catholic Church threatened the security of the nation. The project will analyse how Protestant and Catholic historians used the new techniques of 'scientific' historical scholarship to redefine the relationship between Catholicism and English identity in the period 1869–1919. It is part of a Global Uncertainties initiative funded by the AHRC and ESRC and is allied to a fellowship examining the historical perspectives of Protestant–Catholic conflict in order to contextualise the current interest in religion as a factor in international security concerns.
